O Inferno | Hell

A pintura retrata um espaço subterrâneo (inferno) com uma abertura por onde caem as almas.
As almas condenadas são castigadas por demónios pelos pecados que cometeram, os sete pecados mortais.
Ao centro, dentro de um caldeirão, sofrem almas pecadoras ladeadas de um trono onde se senta o mais importante dos demónios.
Esta pintura contém uma iconografia na representação dos sete pecados mortais que ao diabolizá-los nos permite estabelecer pontes com épocas posteriores.
(Esta pintura, cuja afinidade com a obra de Gil Vicente tem sido assinalada por vários historiadores, foi já atribuída a Jorge Afonso e/ou ao Mestre da Lourinhã. Se há estudiosos que apontam o início do século como a data mais provável para a sua realização (cf. Dagoberto Markl in catálogo da exposição Grão Vasco e a Pintura do Renascimento), outros defendem os anos trinta de Quinhentos)

The image shows an underground space (Hell) with an opening through which the Souls fall down.The Condemned Souls are punished by Demons for their sins, The seven Deadly Sins.
In the Center, inside a bowl, the sinner souls suffer and they are supervisioned by the most powerful of Demons.
This Painting contains an iconography of the seven deadly sins, its diabolic expression allows us to establish bridges with posterior currents.
This Painting, has an affinity with the plot of the Portuguese XVI Century Dramaturg Gil Vicente’s “Auto da Barca do Inferno” as some History critics have pointed out, it has been attributed to Jorge Afonso or Master of Lourinhã. But The beginning of the Century is more likely to be the real date of the painting, Some other authors believe it was painted in the 30s of the year of 1500.
